Who is this Pete person any way?
Dec. 12th, 2008 10:06 amI haven't been on the journals a lot lately, but I couldn't sleep last night and I went skimming back through various things. And something I kept hitting was "and that Pete person we don't know." Considering what he's done for the school, I figured I'd introduce you.
Pete used to work for the British government and was a mate of the Professor years ago. He came to the school for a number of reasons, left, came back with Jono in tow, and then got the sack from his real job and came to the school full time. He was the self-defence teacher at one point, and then guidance counsellor, and he did a lot of work for the leathers in terms of intel, since that's what he was trained in. He was also the one who started the bus run as a way of giving people a chance to get away from the pressure cooker the school is sometimes, which is one of the reasons why I decided to try and keep it going.
It was Pete who looked out for me at the school. His sister sent me over here, but it was him that took care of me. Even when I was in the middle of one fuck up or another, he was there, no matter what. My first week in, it was Pete who left a whole bunch of mix CDs for me, to help with settling in. It was him that didn't give up on me when I was hooked on my powers. It was Pete who believed in me even when I made the stupidest decision in my life and made a deal with the devil to try and get control of things. And he's the one who was still there when I came out the other side, offering me a job and a place to go that used my brain instead of my powers. He's killed for me more than once and he's also done some pretty horrible things just to keep me - and the rest of the school - safe. He's given up so much to try and make sure the school stays somewhere young mutants can go, more than any of us can even imagine or can know.
And not just me - I have my suspicions about Meggan's "Rescue Man" back when she was nabbed by Patches. He never said, but with everything I know now about him being undercover with the Hellfire Club, it makes a hell of a lot of sense.
I started off calling him "Uncle Pete" as a joke, but he thought of me as family, almost right from the start. If it wasn't for him, I'd be dead or some druggie tom living on the streets. And now we've gotten news that means he's most likely dead - nothing that carries over to the others, I'm sorry - and the only thing I can do for him is to try and live up to what he believed I could be. Do the job, do what I can to keep people safe, don't let the bastards win. No matter what it takes.
I know people are upset and trying to move on. I don't want to drag everyone back into the grief. But I couldn't let things go, not without trying to explain to people who this Pete person was, how important he was to the school as well as to me. All of us over at the Snow Valley Centre, we're not strangers, not really. You may not know us, but we're here, working to keep you safe. And we might not always succeed - there's only so much anyone can do in a world like ours - but we're out here, doing our best.
Pete, I know you'd want me home with my family for Christmas. I'm sorry, but I can't do that. Meg, Kurt, Ange... forgive me, yeah? The job's the only thing keeping me going right now. Just a couple of weeks more and I'll be done, but I can't stop yet. And maybe Pete would clip me around the ear for it, but I think he'd understand as well. Some things just need to be finished.
